Slot Receivers
A Slot receiver is a player that lines up closer to the middle of the field than traditional wide receivers. They are typically shorter, stockier, and tougher than WRs. Their ability to run precise routes is key for success at this position, as is a great understanding of timing and good chemistry with the quarterback.
In addition to their pass receiving skills, Slot receivers also need to be excellent blocking players. This is because they will often be called into pre-snap motion as the ball is snapped and then need to block for running plays such as sweeps or slants. They also need to be able to pick up blitzes from linebackers and secondary players.
There are times when Slot receivers are asked to carry the ball as well, such as on pitch plays or end-arounds. This requires them to be very quick and able to outrun the defense. A great example of this is Wayne Chrebet, who had a career with 580 receptions, 7,365 yards, and 41 touchdowns over a 12-year period. He was a fantastic slot receiver and paved the way for this position to become what it is today. This is one of the reasons why teams need to have multiple quality Slot receivers on their roster.
